CAS :Deferiprone is a drug used to treat iron overload. It is an organoiron compound that competitively inhibits ferrochelatase, the enzyme responsible for the last step in heme synthesis. Deferiprone prevents the accumulation of iron in tissues and organs, as well as reversing or delaying organ damage caused by excess iron. Deferiprone has been shown to be effective in treating congestive heart failure, cellular physiology disorders, and infectious diseases such as malaria. This drug also has anti-inflammatory properties which may be related to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
