Benzonitrile has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activities of cytochrome P450, acetylcholinesterase, and monoamine oxidase, which are important in metabolism. Benzonitrile binds to these enzymes through hydrogen bonding interactions as well as steric interactions with the enzyme's active site. The inhibition of these enzymes leads to decreased production of neurotransmitters and other metabolites, causing cellular dysfunction.
