As the end product of glycolysis, it bridges the gap between glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation. This compound is a tumor metabolite, offering immunoprotective effects of lactate in antitumor immunity. Additionally, it possesses antimicrobial properties and can be used as a food preservative.
