Hydriodic acid is also used to produce hydrogen fluoride and phosphorus pentoxide, which are both used as analytical reagents. It has been shown to have genotoxic activity, as well as receptor activity for fatty acids. Hydriodic acid has also been shown to be an effective treatment for autoimmune diseases and metabolic disorders. Hydriodic acid is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor and can be corrosive to the skin, eyes, or mucous membranes. It has a low boiling point and reacts readily with water vapor to form hydrogen gas. The reaction between hydriodic acid and water vapor produces heat that can cause fires if the mixture is not handled carefully.
