It is produced by the oxidation of glyoxal, glycolaldehyde, and other simple sugars. 2-Methyl-3-buten-2-ol has been found to have toxic effects on wild type strains of Escherichia coli, including inhibition of growth and induction of cell death. In addition, 2-methyl-3 buten 2 ol has been shown to react with other molecules in the environment to produce epoxides.
