It is hydrolyzed to its active form, darunavir, in the liver by esterases. 3-Hydroxy darunavir binds to the peptide receptor CXCR4 and inhibits HIV from entering the cell. 3-Hydroxy darunavir has also been shown to inhibit ion channels and Ligand-gated ion channels, which are important for neurotransmission. This drug is used as a research tool for Cell Biology and as an inhibitor of ion channels.
