2-[(2-Hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)formamido]pentanedioic acid (2HMPDA) is a fluorescent dye that is used for staining and quantification of estrone. It can be used to measure the amount of estrone in wastewater samples. 2HMPDA is also a metabolic product of glutamate and can be used as an extracellular marker for this amino acid. The use of 2HMPDA to detect glutamate has been shown in both synthetic and natural environments, such as activated sludge and soil bacteria. 2HMPDA can also be used as an indicator for degraders in activated sludge wastewater treatment systems. The sequence of the gene encoding this compound has been determined, revealing it belongs to a novel group of enzymes called diterpene synthases.
