Bivalirudina è un peptide sintetico che funge da inibitore diretto della trombina, utilizzato principalmente come anticoagulante in contesti clinici, in particolare durante le interventi coronarici percutanei. La sua struttura è composta da 20 aminoacidi ed è derivata dal peptide di irudina trovato nelle sanguisughe. Bivalirudina mostra un'alta affinità per la trombina, prevenendo efficacemente la conversione del fibrinogeno in fibrina, che è cruciale nel processo di coagulazione. La sostanza viene somministrata tramite iniezione endovenosa e ha una emivita relativamente breve, richiedendo un attento monitoraggio dei livelli di anticoagulazione durante il trattamento.
