Idrossido di sodio, comunemente noto come soda caustica o liscivia, è un composto inorganico con la formula NaOH. È un solido bianco e inodore che è altamente solubile in acqua, producendo una soluzione fortemente alcalina. Idrossido di sodio è igroscopico, il che significa che può assorbire umidità dall'aria, ed è tipicamente incontrato in forma solida come pellet, fiocchi o granuli. Ha un alto punto di fusione ed è una base forte, dissociandosi facilmente in acqua per rilasciare ioni idrossido (OH⁻), il che lo rende efficace nella neutralizzazione degli acidi. Questo composto è ampiamente utilizzato in vari settori, tra cui la produzione chimica, la produzione di carta e il trattamento dell'acqua, così come nei prodotti per la pulizia domestica. A causa della sua natura caustica, Idrossido di sodio può causare gravi ustioni chimiche e deve essere maneggiato con cura, utilizzando l'equipaggiamento di protezione personale appropriato. È anche importante notare che Idrossido di sodio reagisce esotermicamente con l'acqua, quindi deve sempre essere aggiunto all'acqua, non viceversa, per evitare schizzi e potenziali pericoli.
