It is insoluble in water and reacts with strong bases. 2-Nitrocycloheptan-1-one is used as an additive in the manufacture of dinitrogen tetroxide, which is a chemical weapon used for military purposes. The allylation of this compound yields an allyl ether, which can be used to synthesize other compounds. The functional theory for this reaction suggests that the enolate anion from the enolate salt reacts with the nitronate ion from the nitric acid to form a ternary complex. This complex then undergoes hydrolysis and releases dinitrogen tetroxide.
