Descrizione:
Benzene, dimetile si riferisce a una classe di composti organici derivati dal benzene con due gruppi metilici attaccati. I più comuni isomeri del dimetilbenzene sono orto-, meta- e para-xilene, ognuno dei quali differisce nella posizione dei gruppi metilici sull'anello del benzene. Questi composti sono liquidi incolori a temperatura ambiente, con un odore dolce e aromatico. Sono relativamente non polari e hanno una solubilità moderata in acqua, ma sono più solubili nei solventi organici. I dimetilbenzeni sono infiammabili e possono comportare rischi per la salute se inalati o a contatto con la pelle, potenzialmente causando irritazione respiratoria o effetti sul sistema nervoso centrale. Sono utilizzati principalmente come solventi, nella produzione di plastiche e come intermedi nella sintesi di vari prodotti chimici. Inoltre, sono importanti nell'industria petrolchimica.
