    Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor that is used to treat erectile dysfunction. The compound is not considered hazardous and does not have any known environmental effects. It is primarily metabolized by the liver and excreted in urine. Metabolites are inactive and do not contribute to the pharmacological effect of sildenafil. Sildenafil has been detected in wastewater, although at very low concentrations due to its high water solubility. Matrix effects, such as adsorption onto particulates, can also affect the concentration of active drug in wastewater samples. There are various analytical methods available for measuring sildenafil in wastewater including headspace gas chromatography (HSGC), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS), and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
