Darunavir is a protease inhibitor that inhibits the action of HIV protease, an enzyme that catalyses the cleavage of the polyprotein precursor to mature viral proteins. Darunavir binds to the active site of HIV protease and blocks it, preventing cleavage. This drug has been shown to be effective in inhibiting HIV-1 replication in vitro and in vivo.
