Tenofovir è un farmaco antiretrovirale utilizzato principalmente nel trattamento e nella prevenzione dell'HIV/AIDS e dell'epatite B cronica. Appartiene alla classe degli inibitori della transcriptasi inversa nucleotidica (NRTIs) e agisce inibendo l'enzima transcriptasi inversa, che è cruciale per la replicazione virale. La struttura chimica di Tenofovir include un gruppo fosfonato, che contribuisce al suo meccanismo d'azione. Viene tipicamente somministrato sotto forma del suo sale di fumarato di disoproxilo, migliorando la sua biodisponibilità. An oral prodrug, used in the treatment of HIV, is tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) hemifumerate and this has improved stability, greater antiviral activity and reduces the risk of side effects such as loss of kidney function.
