5-Aminopentan-2-one, trifluoroacetic acid (5APTFA), is a synthetic analog of the quinazoline alkaloids. It is used in the synthesis of biologically active quinazolines and alkyne derivatives, which are used to synthesize biopharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical drugs. 5APTFA reacts with an alkyne to produce an acyclic compound that can be coupled with a cyclic compound to form a tricyclic or cyclic compound. This reaction is known as a [2+2]cycloaddition. 5APTFA has also been shown to react with carbonyl groups under acidic conditions, yielding ketones.
