The compound also inhibits the production of diphosphorylated guanosine (GDP) from guanosine monophosphate (GMP), which may be important in the regulation of cellular growth. 2,3,5,6-Tetra-O-acetyl-D-galactono-1,4-lactone has also been shown to inhibit the conversion of GMP into GTP by binding to the enzyme GMP synthase.
