Monensina Sodica è un antibiotico ionoforo polietere utilizzato principalmente come additivo alimentare nel bestiame per migliorare i tassi di crescita e l'efficienza alimentare. È prodotto dalla fermentazione del batterio *Streptomyces cinnamonensis*. Questo composto presenta una struttura complessa caratterizzata da uno scheletro di polietere ciclico, che gli consente di trasportare cationi monovalenti, come sodio e potassio, attraverso le membrane biologiche. Monensina Sodica è noto per la sua capacità di interrompere i gradienti ionici, portando a un metabolismo cellulare alterato in alcuni microrganismi, motivo per cui è efficace contro vari protozoi e batteri gram-positivi. In medicina veterinaria, viene utilizzato per prevenire la coccidiosi negli uccelli e per aumentare l'aumento di peso nei ruminanti. Tuttavia, il suo utilizzo deve essere gestito con attenzione a causa della potenziale tossicità nelle specie non bersaglio e dello sviluppo di resistenza nei patogeni.
