Muscarine chloride hydrate is a receptor agonist. Muscarine binds to the acetylcholine receptors on the surface of muscle cells and nerve cells, causing an influx of calcium ions into the cell. Muscarine is used as a research tool for studying ion channels, proteins interactions, and peptides. It has been shown to be an activator of phospholipase C and phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C in pancreatic acinar cells.
