CAS:p-Hydroxyphenyl glycine HCl is a model system for an amide and has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria. It is also an active analogue of sodium succinate and cyclic peptide, which are glycopeptide antibiotics that have shown activity against gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. The hydroxyl group on p-hydroxyphenyl glycine HCl interacts with hydrogen bonding interactions in the bacterial cell wall, preventing the formation of a covalent bond between the drug molecule and the enzyme cell wall synthesis required for cell wall biosynthesis. This causes inhibition of protein synthesis, leading to cell death by apoptosis.
