This compound functions as a structural analog of phosphoenolpyruvate, interfering with cell wall synthesis. Specifically, it targets and irreversibly inhibits the enzyme UDP-N-acetylglucosamine enolpyruvyl transferase (MurA), which is critical in the early stages of bacterial cell wall biosynthesis. This inhibition prevents the formation of peptidoglycan, leading to bacterial cell lysis.
