(2E)-3-Methyl-2-hexenoic acid is a fatty acid that is metabolized by the liver to 3-hydroxy-3-methylhexanoic acid. This compound has been shown to be effective in the treatment of chronic schizophrenia, with clinical studies showing that it may be more effective than other anti-schizophrenia drugs. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis
