BTSA1 has been shown to act as an effector protein by binding to mitochondrial superoxide and inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential. It also inhibits the activation of caspase-9 and apoptosis pathway, which leads to apoptosis. BTSA1 has been shown to have anti-leukemic activity and may be a potential therapeutic target for cancer.
