(+)-O,O'-Di-p-toluoyl-D-tartaric acid has been shown to be an orthosteric agonist at the D2 receptor, meaning it binds directly to the receptor in the absence of any other compounds. It binds to the extracellular site of the receptor, with a binding affinity that is 10 times more potent than that of apomorphine. The compound has been shown to have antidepressant effects when administered systemically, as well as in animal models of depression.
