3-Phenoxyphenylacetic acid is a diphenyl ether compound. It is used as a preservative and has antimycobacterial activity. 3-Phenoxyphenylacetic acid has been shown to be active against tuberculosis, with an MIC of 0.5 ug/mL. In addition, it can inhibit the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and erythromycin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The mechanism of action is not fully understood, but may involve the inhibition of electron transport or oxidative phosphorylation in bacterial cells. 3-Phenoxyphenylacetic acid also inhibits the formation of reactive oxygen species from NADPH oxidase in human neutrophils, which may contribute to its antimicrobial activity.
