Acido polilattico-co-glicolico (PLGA) è un copolimero biodegradabile composto da monomeri di acido lattico e acido glicolico. È caratterizzato dalla sua biocompatibilità, rendendolo adatto per varie applicazioni biomediche, inclusi sistemi di somministrazione di farmaci, ingegneria dei tessuti e suture. Le proprietà del PLGA possono essere adattate modificando il rapporto tra acido lattico e acido glicolico, il che influisce sulla sua velocità di degradazione e resistenza meccanica. Tipicamente, il PLGA presenta una temperatura di transizione vetrosa che consente di rimanere flessibile a temperature fisiologiche. La degradazione del PLGA avviene attraverso idrolisi, portando al rilascio graduale dei farmaci incapsulati o alla scomposizione del polimero in sottoprodotti non tossici, principalmente acidi lattico e glicolico, che sono metabolizzati naturalmente dal corpo. Inoltre, il PLGA può essere lavorato in varie forme, come microsfere, film e impalcature, aumentando la sua versatilità nelle applicazioni mediche.
