1-(Arabinofuranosyl)-5-azidomethyluracil (AFAU) is a novel nucleoside that is synthesized by the reaction of 5-azido-1-(2'-deoxyribofuranosyl) uracil with phosphoramidite. The synthesis of this nucleoside has been used as a model for the synthesis of other deoxyribonucleosides. AFAU is an activator of ribonucleotide reductase and has shown activity against DNA and RNA viruses, such as influenza virus, herpes simplex virus type 1, and human immunodeficiency virus type 1.
