CAS:Teicoplanin is a cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by interfering with the enzymes responsible for cross-linking amino acids. It has been shown to decrease blood pressure in humans and can also be used as an analytical probe for amines. The presence of estrogens can increase the activity of teicoplanin, while some drugs such as antihistamines and other amines may reduce its activity. Teicoplanin is not active against Gram-negative bacteria, but is effective against Gram-positive bacteria including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Teicoplanin binds to the enzyme peptidoglycan synthetase, which prevents it from forming cross-links between amino acids. This prevents cell wall formation and causes cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis.
