It has been shown to have physiological functions in humans, such as the regulation of cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Perfluorotetradecanoic acid also has many potential applications in the food industry, including use as a chitosan polymer additive and an optical sensor for monitoring water quality. This chemical can be used to create analytical methods for detecting trace amounts of biological materials in vitro. Perfluorotetradecanoic acid is not toxic to humans or animals at low concentrations, but it becomes more toxic when combined with trifluoroacetic acid (TFAA). TFAA is used as a solvent for perflurotridecanoic acid during wastewater treatment.
