It is an activator of the ribonucleotide reductase enzyme, which is involved in DNA synthesis. 3’-Deoxy-3’-fluoro-2-thiouridine has been used successfully as an antiviral agent against HIV and other viruses, and as an anticancer agent against leukemia. The monophosphate form of this drug has been shown to inhibit DNA replication in vitro.
