Acido glicirretico è un composto triterpenoide derivato dalla radice della pianta di liquirizia, Glycyrrhiza glabra. È noto per il suo sapore dolce ed è spesso utilizzato nella medicina tradizionale per le sue proprietà anti-infiammatorie, antivirali e epatoprotettive. La struttura chimica di Acido glicirretico presenta un telaio di triterpene pentaciclico, che contribuisce alla sua attività biologica. Si trova tipicamente come una polvere cristallina bianca o bianco sporco ed è solubile in solventi organici come etanolo e metanolo, ma ha una solubilità limitata in acqua. Acido glicirretico è riconosciuto per la sua capacità di inibire l'enzima 11β-idrossisteroide deidrogenasi di tipo 2, il che può portare a un aumento dei livelli di cortisolo nel corpo. Glycyrrhetinic acid is the aglycone form of the triterpenoid glycyrrhizin that is naturally found in licorice root. In vitro studies have evidenced the anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial activites of glycyrrhetinic acid (Loizzo, 2013). In in vitro cell models and mice models of inflammatory conditions, glycyrrhetinic acid inhibited the release of interleukins and the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha while showing a hepatoprotective effect (Yu , 2015).
