2-Amino-4-methylfuran-3-carbonitrile is a reagent that is used in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity. This compound reacts with acid hydrazide to form a dimer, which may be responsible for its activity. The yields of this reaction are high and it is also relatively easy to synthesize. The x-ray structure of 2-amino-4-methylfuran-3-carbonitrile has been determined and it was found to be a dimer in the crystalline state.
