Sclareol is a compound that is found in the essential oil of clary sage. It has been shown to have significant cytotoxic effects on cancer cells, as it inhibits cellular proliferation and induces apoptosis by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP production. Sclareol also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Sclareol can inhibit the growth of Candida glabrata yeast at concentrations of 10-5M or less. This compound has also been shown to be effective against other pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Helicobacter pylori, and Escherichia coli.
