Descrizione:
Podofilotossina è un lignano che si trova naturalmente ed è derivato dalle radici della pianta mayapple, *Podophyllum peltatum*. È caratterizzato dalla sua complessa struttura policiclica, che include uno scheletro di dibenzilbutirólactone. Questo composto mostra un'attività biologica significativa, in particolare come agente antitumorale, ed è stato utilizzato nel trattamento di vari tipi di cancro, incluso il cancro testicolare e alcuni tipi di lesioni cutanee. Podofilotossina funziona inibendo l'enzima topoisomerasi II, che è cruciale per la replicazione del DNA e la divisione cellulare, portando così alla morte cellulare nelle cellule tumorali a rapida divisione. Inoltre, possiede proprietà antivirali, in particolare contro il papillomavirus umano (HPV), rendendolo utile nei trattamenti topici per le verruche. La sostanza si trova tipicamente in forma cristallina ed è solubile in solventi organici, ma ha una solubilità limitata in acqua. A causa dei suoi potenti effetti biologici, Podofilotossina viene maneggiato con cura in ambienti di laboratorio e clinici, e i suoi derivati, come l'etoposide e il teniposide, sono più comunemente usati nei regimi di chemioterapia.
