Thiomersal is a preservative that is used in vaccines and other pharmaceutical products. It has been shown to have biochemical properties that are similar to those of benzalkonium chloride, which may cause cross-reactivity with the sephadex G-100 gel. Thiomersal has been shown to have an adverse effect on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by inhibiting the activity of DNA polymerases. Thiomersal also inhibits certain enzymes activities, such as cytosolic Ca2+-ATPase, and can affect human serum proteins and water vapor.
