CAS:Prodotto controllato4-Chloromercuribenzoic acid (CMBA) is a toxic compound that is used as a preservative in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It inhibits the enzyme succinic dehydrogenase, which is involved in the Krebs cycle. CMBA also binds to proteins to form covalent bonds, which disrupts protein function. It has been shown to inhibit several enzymes including phosphofructokinase, hexokinase, and glutathione reductase. CMBA binds to metal ions such as copper or zinc by forming a chelate complex with them and this binding process reduces the availability of these metals for other cellular processes. CMBA also forms covalent bonds with receptor molecules such as histidine or cysteine residues on proteins. This binding process can lead to structural changes in the protein that result in inhibition of enzyme activity.
