It is used as an organic solvent and a reagent in the synthesis of organic compounds. 1,1-Diphenylethanol is soluble in both water and organic solvents. It also reacts with proton to form hypophosphorous acid. This acid can react with silicon or magnesium to form phosphoric acid, which can then be converted into ammonium nitrate by reacting with ammonia. 1,1-Diphenylethanol also reacts with alkyl halides through an intermolecular hydrogen bonding mechanism.
