Il monofosfato di adenosina ciclico (AMPc) è un secondo messaggero cruciale in vari processi biologici, svolgendo un ruolo significativo nelle vie di segnalazione cellulare. Deriva dall'adenosina trifosfato (ATP) ed è caratterizzato dalla sua struttura ciclica, che consiste in uno zucchero ribosio, un gruppo fosfato e una base di adenina. È noto che AMPc ha la capacità di attivare la proteina chinasi A (PKA), portando alla fosforilazione di varie proteine bersaglio, influenzando così le vie metaboliche, l'espressione genica e la proliferazione cellulare. La sostanza è solubile in acqua e mostra stabilità in condizioni fisiologiche, sebbene possa essere idrolizzata dalle fosfodiesterasi. I livelli di AMPc nelle cellule sono strettamente regolati, poiché possono cambiare rapidamente in risposta a segnali extracellulari, come ormoni e neurotrasmettitori. Questa regolazione è vitale per mantenere l'omeostasi e facilitare risposte adattive nelle cellule. A causa del suo ruolo centrale nella segnalazione, AMPc è anche un obiettivo per interventi farmacologici in varie malattie, tra cui diabete e condizioni cardiache.
