2,5-Di(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole is a hydrogen bonding molecule that has been shown to be a photocatalyst. The compound absorbs ultraviolet light and uses the energy to break the hydrogen bonds in water molecules, forming hydroxide radicals (OH·) and hydrogen gas. The OH· radicals can then react with other molecules to produce other products. 2,5-Di(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole was synthesized by reacting 2,5-diphenyl pyridine with 1H-pyrrole. Hydrogen bonding interactions between the phenyl groups of 2,5-diphenyl pyridine and the electron donating nitrogens of 1H-pyrrole are thought to be responsible for stabilizing the molecule.
