It binds to the carbonyl group on the bacteria surface, which prevents the formation of reactive compounds which are necessary for cell division. The reactive form of 1-methylindolin-2-one also has antibacterial activity against a variety of bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli.
