Diatomita, noto anche come terra di diatomee, è una roccia sedimentaria morbida e silicea che si verifica naturalmente, composta principalmente dai resti fossilizzati di diatomee, un tipo di alga microscopica. La sua composizione chimica è prevalentemente silice (SiO2), spesso superiore all'80%, insieme a quantità variabili di allumina, ossido di ferro e altri minerali in traccia. Diatomita è caratterizzata dalla sua struttura leggera e porosa, che le conferisce eccellenti proprietà assorbenti e un'alta superficie. È tipicamente bianca o bianco sporco e ha una bassa densità, rendendola utile in varie applicazioni. A causa della sua natura abrasiva, Diatomita è comunemente usata come ausilio alla filtrazione, nella produzione di materiali isolanti e come pesticida naturale. Celite is a porous, granular material that has been used as an adsorbent and filter medium for the separation of particles from fluids. It is made of aluminum silicate with small amounts of other substances such as sodium, calcium, or iron oxide. Celite is chemically inert and has a high surface area. The redox potential of celite depends on the amount of zirconium oxide in the material. This property can be used to remove oxygen from human serum or to purify water vapor by removing dissolved gases such as oxygen and nitrogen. Celite can also be used to separate biological materials using surface methodology. Histological analysis shows that celite filters can remove cellular components such as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and other macromolecules without altering their structure.
