Difosfato di primaquina è un farmaco antimalarico utilizzato principalmente per trattare e prevenire la malaria, in particolare le forme ricorrenti causate da Plasmodium vivax e Plasmodium ovale. È un derivato sintetico della chinolina e si caratterizza per la sua capacità di agire sulle fasi epatiche del parassita della malaria, prevenendo così la ricaduta. Il composto viene tipicamente somministrato nella sua forma di sale diphosfato, che ne migliora la solubilità e la biodisponibilità. La primaquina agisce generando specie reattive dell'ossigeno che danneggiano i componenti cellulari del parassita. È importante notare che la primaquina può causare anemia emolitica in individui con carenza di glucosio-6-fosfato deidrogenasi (G6PD), rendendo necessaria la screening prima del trattamento. Il farmaco è generalmente ben assorbito quando assunto per via orale e ha una emivita relativamente breve, richiedendo un regime di dosaggio specifico per garantire l'efficacia. Inoltre, la primaquina è controindicata durante la gravidanza e in alcune popolazioni a causa di potenziali effetti avversi. Primaquine is an antimalarial drug that belongs to the class of natural compounds. Primaquine diphosphate (PQDP) is a recombinant cytochrome P450 enzyme that has been shown to have high activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other bacteria.
