Bilirubina è un composto giallastro che è un prodotto della decomposizione dell'eme, un componente dell'emoglobina presente nei globuli rossi. Viene prodotto principalmente nel fegato ed escreto nella bile, svolgendo un ruolo cruciale nel sistema di gestione dei rifiuti del corpo. Bilirubina esiste in due forme principali: Bilirubina non coniugato (indiretto), che è liposolubile e non solubile in acqua, e Bilirubina coniugato (diretto), che è solubile in acqua grazie alla sua coniugazione con acido glucuronico. Questa trasformazione facilita la sua escrezione dal corpo.
