cis-Stilbene is a natural product that has been shown to have anticancer activity. It is an epoxidase inhibitor and potent inducer of apoptosis in human cancer cells. The mechanism of cis-stilbene's anticancer activity may be due to the steric interactions between the molecule and the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which are responsible for the conversion of dihydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate. This may inhibit the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and proteins needed for cell division. cis-Stilbene also has anti-inflammatory properties that are believed to be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
