(-)-Cicloesimide è un composto che si verifica naturalmente e che funge da importante inibitore della sintesi proteica nelle cellule eucariotiche. È derivato dal batterio Streptomyces griseus ed è utilizzato principalmente nella ricerca per studiare l'espressione genica e la funzione delle proteine. La sostanza è caratterizzata dalla sua capacità di inibire la fase di allungamento della traduzione interferendo con la macchina ribosomiale, mirando specificamente alla subunità ribosomiale 60S. Questa inibizione porta a una diminuzione della sintesi delle proteine, rendendola uno strumento prezioso in biologia molecolare e biochimica. (-)-Cicloesimide è tipicamente una polvere cristallina bianca o bianco sporco, ed è solubile in solventi organici come etanolo e dimetilsolfossido (DMSO), ma ha una solubilità limitata in acqua.
