Isoasatone A is a fatty acid that is expressed by host plants in response to insect attack. Isoasatone A has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on lepidoptera larvae and may be used as a natural pesticide. It inhibits nicotinic acetylcholine (NA) receptors, which are involved in the transmission of impulses from the central nervous system to muscles, and the synthesis of density lipoprotein (LDL). Isoasatone A also has a molecular response to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification, which may be due to its ability to inhibit enzyme genes. The enzyme activity of isoaustone A can be inhibited by piperonyl butoxide, an inhibitor of the enzyme cytochrome P450.
