Mevastatina, noto anche come compactina, è una statina di origine naturale utilizzata principalmente per le sue proprietà di abbassamento del colesterolo. È derivata dalla fermentazione di alcuni funghi, in particolare Penicillium citrinum. La struttura chimica di Mevastatina presenta un anello di lattone e un gruppo acido idrossilico, che sono cruciali per la sua attività biologica. In quanto inibitore della HMG-CoA reduttasi, Mevastatina gioca un ruolo significativo nella via del mevalonato, riducendo efficacemente la sintesi di colesterolo nel fegato.
