Acido 4-(2-idrossietil)-1-piperazinaetansolfonico, comunemente noto come HEPES, è un agente tampone zwitterionico ampiamente utilizzato nella ricerca biologica e biochimica. Ha un valore di pKa intorno a 7,5, rendendolo particolarmente efficace per mantenere il pH fisiologico nelle colture cellulari e nei saggi biochimici. HEPES è solubile in acqua e mostra buona stabilità in condizioni fisiologiche, il che è cruciale per esperimenti che richiedono livelli di pH costanti.
