3H-Imidazo[4,5-c]pyridin-2-ol is a reactive compound that is used in the synthesis of other compounds. It can be generated by the nitration of aniline and subsequent reduction of the nitro group to an amine. This product can also be synthesized from 2-aminoethane and ethyl acetate. 3H-Imidazo[4,5-c]pyridin-2-ol reacts with nucleophiles such as chloride ions to form carboxylates, which leads to its use in assays for amines. It has been shown that this product dimerizes in the presence of water or alcohols and reacts with primary amines to form tetrones.
