Disprosio è un elemento chimico con il simbolo Dy e numero atomico 66, classificato come un lantano nella tavola periodica. È un metallo bianco argenteo che è relativamente stabile nell'aria, formando uno strato di ossido protettivo che previene ulteriori ossidazioni. Disprosio è noto per la sua alta suscettibilità magnetica ed è uno degli elementi più efficaci per migliorare le proprietà magnetiche dei materiali, rendendolo prezioso nella produzione di magneti permanenti, in particolare in applicazioni ad alte prestazioni come veicoli elettrici e turbine eoliche. Ha un punto di fusione di circa 1.412 gradi Celsius e un punto di ebollizione di circa 2.570 gradi Celsius, indicando la sua stabilità a temperature elevate. Disprosio è anche utilizzato nei reattori nucleari e come drogante in alcuni tipi di laser. In termini di reattività, può reagire con acqua e acidi, producendo gas idrogeno. Disprosio è relativamente raro nella crosta terrestre e la sua estrazione di solito comporta processi complessi da minerali come bastnäsite e monazite.
