Stagno, con il numero CAS 7440-31-5, è un metallo bianco argenteo noto per la sua malleabilità e duttilità. Appartiene al gruppo 14 della tavola periodica e ha un numero atomico di 50. Stagno ha un punto di fusione relativamente basso rispetto a molti altri metalli, il che lo rende utile in varie applicazioni, in particolare nella saldatura e nella rivestitura di altri metalli per prevenire la corrosione. È resistente alla corrosione e all'ossidazione, il che contribuisce alla sua durata in vari ambienti. Stagno può esistere in diversi alotropi, con la forma più stabile che è il beta-Stagno, che è metallico a temperatura ambiente. È anche noto per la sua capacità di formare leghe, come il bronzo quando combinato con rame, migliorando le proprietà dei materiali risultanti. I composti di Stagno, come l'ossido di Stagno e i composti organo-Stagno, hanno varie applicazioni industriali, tra cui ceramiche, vetro e come stabilizzatori nel PVC.
